Useful Tips For Learning Acoustic Guitar

Nothing beats adequate training in learning acoustic guitar. You can start playing by learning chords from diagrams you see in music magazines but you cannot master the instrument unless you take the basic theory. Wrong playing habits may develop with self-study, which is hard to unlearn afterwards so try to get an experienced teacher.

Many websites in the internet offer free online ways of learning acoustic guitar. They offer music theory, lessons from basic to advanced, illustrative chord diagrams, and simple musical pieces for practice. Instructional videos are also available in these websites and on DVD.

Learning acoustic guitar is one of the easiest ways to teach yourself a musical instrument. It is fun and enjoyable although beginners complain that steel strings hurt their fingertips particularly on the left hand. Some think it is better for beginners to use nylon-stringed guitars at the start. However, the skin naturally thickens in areas where pressure constantly occurs. Do not avoid the little hurt on your fingertips because it will eventually go away. Hammering exercise may strain the fingers but it stretches and strengthens the left hand.

As you are learning acoustic guitar, make sure you shape your plucking nails properly. If the nail is too long, it will hang up on the string. If it is too short, it cannot give enough force to the stroke. If it is squarely shaped, the corner will catch making it impossible to pluck. File your nails until you can see a thin, even edge above the fingertip when you look at your hand with the palm facing you. Make it smooth to avoid a scratchy sound when you are learning acoustic guitar.

Some guitarists create wonderful sound with a pick. However, many guitarists still prefer using fingers over the pick because it opens up many variations in producing a sound. The Travis style of finger picking uses the thumb and the index finger, with support from the pinky, which implants itself firmly on the pick guard while playing. With the Atkins style, you use your thumb, index finger, and middle finger and your pinky as support on the pick guard. You can modify these finger-plucking patterns and use the one which is comfortable for you. Remember that you produce the sound of the guitar through the vibration of the strings that you pluck and you do it with the right hand. Good sound also depends on the mastery of the right hand strumming and plucking techniques as you are learning acoustic guitar.
